Glass Fibre Is Eating Your Barrel: Wear Control for Filled Resins

Why 30% glass destroys a nitrided bore in eighteen months, which alloy layer to specify, and how to plan inspection intervals.

Glass fibre is harder than anything a nitriding furnace produces. If you run 15–30% glass-filled nylon, PBT or PP, the question is not whether the bore will wear but how fast - and what you specified.

Why nitrided steel loses

The nitrided case is around half a millimetre deep. Abrasive glass turns that case into a consumable layer: once it is through, the soft core underneath wears quickly and clearance opens exponentially. In practice we see this on injection barrels running glass-filled nylon in eighteen months to two years.

What to specify instead

  • 2 mm alloy layer - moderate filler loading, mostly virgin material
  • 3 mm - 15–30% glass, normal production hours
  • 5 mm - heavy glass loading, regrind, or three-shift continuous running
  • Ni-based alloy - when there is corrosion on top of abrasion (flame retardants, PVC)

The layer is centrifugally cast and metallurgically bonded, so there is no plating edge to lift. We bore and hone after casting, so the geometry is set after the alloy is in place, not before.

Plan the inspection, not just the purchase

Measure flight lands and bore diameter at fixed intervals - every six months for abrasive running. Record output and melt temperature at the same time. The trend tells you weeks ahead when the set needs attention, instead of telling you on the day quality fails.

And check the screw too

On glass-filled material the screw usually wears faster than the bore. Replacing only the barrel and reusing a worn screw is the commonest false economy we see: the new bore gets worn in by the old flight lands.
